i attended mass today and i liked how the priest emphasized the significance of fasting in his sermon. fasting during lent is like the natural pruning of trees in winter, he said. fasting helps us let go of the excesses in our lives in the same way that snow helps trees get rid of dead branches. after our 40-day fasting, we should have freed ourselves of everything that was unnecessarily weighing us down–be it excessive eating, shopping, nagging, or meddling with other people’s lives–and consequently get that feeling reminiscent of trees growing new branches, leaves, flowers and fruits in springtime.
winter may be too cold and snow too bothersome, but both are instrumental for the success of spring. in a similar way, fasting may entail necessary sacrifices that would bring out the better versions of ourselves.
have a blessed and meaningful lent.
